Artist Statement: "My abstract paintings and drawings reflect my need to document the world as I see it through the use of experimental tones, line, bold gesture, and color. An illusion to the human figure, in whole or in parts, is a very critical component of my works. My goal is to suggest an emotional state of my subject(s), sometimes with some religious or spiritual theme attached. I use various media. Working with acrylic paint allows for an infinite variation. As a result, I can achieve a range from delicateness to bold gestural strokes. I also utilize charcoal and graphite, usually in the form of pencils, and India ink. "Pushing the limits," that is what I am about; using various media in non- traditional and experimental ways. My favorite procedural technique is to "randomly" put lines and shapes unto a surface (simply enjoying the "moment") without any particular purpose or intent. Then, I proceed to diligently search out some possible image(s), usually a figure or a face or form. These images can be vastly distorted. But if they effectively communicate the final mood, I keep them in by highlighting them in some way. More rarely will I start with more literal subjects. I have tried very detailed and realistic paintings but I always seem to inevitably veer toward the more abstract (the more abstract, the better). My favorite artists are Gauguin, Picasso, de Kooning, and Henry Moore."
