Catherine Levinson is a local artist living in Bethesda, Maryland.  Her interest in art began when she attended the High School of Music and Art in New York.  She received her undergraduate degree in art and taught high school art for several years.  She also worked as an Exhibits Technician at the U.S. Weather Department in Washington, D.C.  In the early 1960s she lived in Rio de Jainero where she studied art at the Museu de Arte Moderna.

Her professional career has been in education and psychotherapy.  She holds master’s degrees in Special Education/Learning Disabilities and Social Work.  In her work as a clinical social worker/psychotherapist with young children, Ms. Levinson used art extensively.

Artist Statement:
“My preferred subject matter is interiors with lots of pattern, and still life’s with fruits, flowers and vegetables with lots of pattern.  My use of pattern and color is influenced by my love of Matisse’s use of patterns and bright colors.  My paintings derive their meaning from form rather than subject matter.  My interest lies in the organization of the elements of line, color, shape and pattern through design and composition.   I choose familiar objects that have quality of rhythm and lend themselves to a moment of focus.  Color is paramount to this focus.  The instantaneous power of vibrant colors is a key element in building the structure of the work through repetition and movement in the painting, as are the use of graphic shapes.”
